Helmut Stürmer has passed away at the age of 84. During his multi-decade career, he designed sets and costumes for more than two hundred theater productions, countless operas, and feature films. He collaborated with world-renowned directors such as Liviu Ciulei, Lucian Pintilie, Silviu Purcărete, Gábor Tompa, and Vlad Mugur.
The visual design of many of the most defining performances of the Hungarian Theatre of Cluj is associated with his name: The Cherry Orchard (dir. Vlad Mugur, 1998), The Lourcine Street Affair (dir. Vlad Mugur, 1998), Each in His Own Way (dir. Vlad Mugur, 2000), Pantagruel's Sister-in-Law (dir. Silviu Purcărete, 2003), Gianni Schicchi (dir. Silviu Purcărete, 2007), The Visit (dir. Gábor Tompa, 2015), Lulu (dir. Eszenyi Enikő, 2019), Macbett (dir. Silviu Purcărete, 2021).
The Vlad Mugur Award, presented by our theater to guest artists, was also designed by Helmut Stürmer.
May he rest in peace!
